Austria Vignettes | Key information
In Austria, driving on motorways and expressways requires a vignette fee, which is valid for a specific period. The vignette obligation applies to vehicles up to 3,5 tonnes. Having an Austrian vignette does not allow you to use additional special toll sections – on these you must purchase an additional section ticket. The vignette and the section ticket are electronic and linked to the vehicle’s registration number.
Where are they required?
On motorways and expressways in Austria. Some sections require an additional section toll ticket.
Who must buy one?
Vehicles up to 3,5 tonnes and motorcycles. Heavier vehicles (over 3,5 t) are settled in the GO system.

Map of toll sections in Austria
On the map below you will find motorways and expressways covered by tolls, as well as locations of special sections that require an additional section toll ticket.
Toll sections Map
Vignette sections – Motorways and expressways that require a valid vignette.
Special sections – Tunnels/bridges with additional charges (section toll ticket).
Free sections List of free sections
According to ASFINAG regulations and the Austrian Federal Road Toll Act, on selected motorway sections a vignette is not required. This means they are formally excluded from the obligation to hold an active vignette when travelling on these sections, even though they are part of the expressway and motorway network. The exempt sections are:
- From the border at Walserberg to the Salzburg Nord junction – a section of the A1 (Westautobahn)
- From the border at Kufstein to the Kufstein-Süd junction – a section of the A12 (Inntalautobahn)
- From the border at Hörbranz to the Hohenems junction – a section of the A14 (Rheintal/Walgau)
- The A26 (Linzer Autobahn) section – its status may change depending on infrastructure development and ASFINAG decisions.
The above sections were exempted from the vignette requirement to improve access to local roads and border junctions. These rules were introduced following pressure from local communities, which indicated that the need to purchase a vignette was a barrier to freedom of movement and the economic competitiveness of border regions.

Types and validity of Austrian vignettes
Vignette validity Available periods
Austrian vignettes are available in several options depending on their validity period – vignettes for: 1 (selected) day, 10 days, 2 months, and annual vignettes (with a fixed validity window).
One-day vignette (for a selected day)
Austria was the first EU country to introduce a vignette valid for 1 day. It is valid until 23:59 on the date selected in the order. This means that if you buy a vignette “for today” at 22:00, it will be valid for only about 2 hours.
10-day vignette
Valid from the date selected in the order, plus the next 9 days, until 23:59 on the last day. If activated “from today”, it starts when it is processed in the system and ends according to the rule above.
2-month vignette
Valid from the selected start date until the same date two months later, until 23:59. If the following month does not have that date, the validity ends on the last day of the month. Two-month vignettes are not available in our service.
Annual vignette 2026
The annual vignette has a fixed validity period: from 1 December 2024 (or from the moment of purchase after that date) until 31 January 2026. In the second half of the year it may be better value to choose a shorter vignette (e.g. a 2-month one).
Types of Austrian vignettes Choosing the right vignette for your vehicle category
Choosing the correct vignette for your vehicle in Austria is straightforward, even for those travelling through Austria for the first time. Vehicles that require a vignette are divided into two main groups:
| Vehicle category | Description |
|---|---|
| Passenger cars | All vehicles up to 3,5 tonnes |
| Motorcycles | Two-wheeled vehicles |

Placing and editing orders
Austria vignettes Placing orders
Austria vignettes can be purchased en route (at ÖAMTC/ARBÖ/ADAC sales points, selected petrol stations, machines) as well as online via the authorised Autopay service. It is best to buy a 1-day or 10-day vignette online 1–2 days before departure. To place an online order, prepare:
- the vehicle registration number,
- the country of registration,
- the vignette start date.
For vehicles registered in Germany or Austria, the registration number should be entered with a hyphen instead of the crest (validation stickers), e.g. HH-H730 (DE ) or W-2628T (AT
).
After payment, we process the order in the ASFINAG system – it usually takes a few minutes. Once activated, you will receive a confirmation by email.

Special sections (additional charges)
Section tollsList of special toll sections
The Austrian digital vignette does not cover some special sections (tunnels/bridges). On these parts of the road, an additional section toll ticket is required:
- A9 Bosruck – between the Spital/Pyhrn and Ardning junctions.
- A9 Gleinalm – between the St. Michael and Übelbach junctions.
- A10 Tauern / Katschberg – between the Flachau and Rennweg junctions.
- A11 Karawanken – between the St. Jakob im Rosental motorway junction and the national border in the Karawanken tunnel
- A13 Brenner – the entire A13 motorway is subject to a section toll.
- S16 Arlberg – between the St. Anton am Arlberg motorway junction and the Langen am Arlberg junction.
How to use itSpecial section by car up to 3,5 tonnes
Cars that have paid for a section ticket online can use the green lane, which is located on the left-hand side of the toll gates. If the green lane has a barrier, it will be raised automatically. If the lane has no barrier, you must be sure that the fee has been paid correctly; otherwise a penalty fee may be charged.
Passenger vehicles should not use lanes marked “GO”, as these are intended for heavy transport with a gross vehicle weight above 3,5 tonnes.
Important
Green “fast lane” lanes without barriers are intended for drivers who already have a valid section ticket (purchased online). Using them without a ticket results in a fine.
How to use itSpecial section by motorcycle
Unlike cars, motorcycles have their registration plates at the rear, so automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) systems often fail to read them correctly. This means the barrier may not open even if the rider has an active fee. In such cases, contact the toll staff using the intercom/button located at the toll gate.

Inspections and fines in Austria
Validity checks How is the vignette checked?
Checks are carried out by roadside camera systems and authorised services, including ASFINAG patrols and motorway services. Registration plates are compared with the database of active vignettes and section tickets. During checks the following are verified: vignette/ticket validity, correct assignment to the registration number, and any signs of manipulation.
Consequences of missing payment Fines for no vignette / no ticket
Driving without a valid vignette or section toll ticket may result in a penalty fee, issued on the spot or sent by post to the vehicle owner:
- cars – € 120
- motorcycles – € 65
Refusing to pay the substitute toll may lead to proceedings and a fine of up to € 3,000. Manipulating vignette data (e.g. stickers) may result in a higher penalty – up to € 240 for cars and € 130 for motorcycles.

Buy Austrian VignettesFrequently asked questions | FAQ
1. Are vignettes available as stickers in Austria?
Yes. Austria has a mixed tolling system for motorways and expressways – sticker vignettes and digital vignettes. If you are driving and see a sticker on someone’s windscreen while you do not have one, there is no need to worry: vehicles with an online vignette do not use stickers. From 2027, Austrian sticker vignettes will no longer be available.
2. Are there special toll sections in Austria?
Yes. In Austria there are special toll sections where, in addition to the vignette, you must pay an extra fee for the passage.
3. Which special toll sections are there in Austria?
Selected motorways and tunnels. An additional fee is required for the A13 Brenner motorway, the A10 Tauern motorway, the S16 Arlberg road tunnel, the A11 Karawanken motorway (southbound), and the A9 Pyhrn motorway.
4. How can you recognise a special toll section in Austria?
Access to special toll sections is through dedicated toll gates with barriers, where you must stop to pay the additional fee.
5. Do I have to stop at the toll gates to pay a section toll in Austria?
Yes. On most special toll sections you must stop before the barrier. Some Austrian toll sections, such as the Brenner route, have a so-called Green Lane without a barrier, but you can only use it if you have paid for the passage online in advance.
6. Can I use the Green Lane on a special toll section in Austria if I have not paid in advance?
No. If you have not purchased the fee for that section or the “FLEX electronic section toll” service is not active, you should not use the Green Lane.
7. What happens if I drive through the Green Lane without paying?
The system will issue a fine. Passing through the Green Lane without paying the section toll or without an active “FLEX electronic section toll” service results in a penalty notice being issued, which the driver will receive by post.
8. Do I need to display the confirmation of an Austrian digital vignette in a visible place?
You don’t have to. The validity of digital vignettes is checked based on the vehicle registration plates, via camera systems or authorised services.
9. Do I need to buy an Austrian vignette 18 days in advance?
It depends! You can buy 1-day and 10-day Austrian vignettes without any additional restrictions or a waiting period, even for today. For 2-month and annual vignettes, consumers should purchase the vignette 18 days before the start date. This rule does not apply to orders placed by businesses.
10. How can I check the validity of my Austrian vignette?
You can check your Austrian vignette validity on the official ASFINAG website. Click here to proceed.
11. Is the 1-day Austrian vignette valid for 24 hours?
The “one-day” Austrian vignette is valid on the date selected in the order. This means that if you buy it with a future start date, it will be valid for 24 hours, from 00:00 to 23:59 on that day. If you buy it with the start date set to today, it will only be valid until the end of today (so less than 24 hours).
12. Can I refund or edit an Austrian vignette?
Austria allows edits or refunds of vignettes depending on their status (active/inactive). You can check whether you can edit your vignette by clicking HERE.
