Austria digital vignette - information
Toll roads in Austria - map
In Austria, you must pay tolls to use motorways and expressways. Vehicles up to 3,5 tonnes pay either by buying a motorway vignette or, on certain stretches, a section ticket. The two charges are independent of each other, so before setting off, check your route and purchase the vignette, the section ticket, or both—whichever your trip requires. All tolled sections are shown on the map below.

Types of Austrian motorway digital vignettes
Austrian motorway vignettes are intended for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and motorcycles. The system is intuitive and well-organized. Monitoring is carried out by roadside surveillance systems and the relevant authorities. Below is a table showing the types of vignettes:
E-vignette category | E-vignette purpose |
---|---|
Car | Motorbike |
All vehicles up to 3,5 tonnes gross weight | Two-wheeled vehicles |
Validity period of vignettes
Austrian motorway vignette for a specific day
Since December 1, 2023, Austria has become the first country in Europe to introduce a new type of motorway vignette—a vignette valid for a specific day. The “1-day” motorway vignette for Austria is valid until 11:59 PM on the day specified in the order. This means that if you purchase the vignette at 10:00 PM with validity “from today,” it will only be valid for about 2 hours.
Austrian motorway vignette for 10 Days
Valid from the date specified in the order plus the following 9 days, until 11:59 PM on the last day. If the vignette is purchased with a “from today” validity, it starts from the moment the order is processed in the Austrian system, plus the next 9 days, also until 11:59 PM on the last day.
Austrian motorway vignette for 2 months
The vignette is valid from the date specified in the order until the same date two months later, until 11:59 PM. If the following month does not have the same date, the vignette is valid until the last day of that month. If you purchase the vignette with a “from today” validity, it starts from the moment of purchase in the Austrian system and ends according to the conditions described above.
Austrian motorway vignette for the year 2025
The annual vignette has a fixed validity period. The 2025 edition is valid from December 1, 2024 (or from the moment of purchase after December 1, 2023) until January 31, 2026. This means that buying the annual vignette becomes less cost-effective around August or September of that year, as shorter-term vignettes—such as the 2-month option—may be more advantageous.
Additional section toll charges
Austrian motorway vignettes do not cover certain additionally tolled sections, such as some tunnels, bridges, or other road parts. Each of these sections is clearly marked, and an additional section ticket must be purchased. Below is a list of additionally tolled sections where motorway vignettes are not valid:
- S16 - Arlberg
- A13 - Brenner
- A10 - Tauern/Katschberg
- A11 - Karawanken
- A9 - Bosruck
- A9 - Gleinalm
Warning! Some lanes marked in green for automatic passage do not have barriers to maximize traffic flow—these lanes are for drivers who have purchased a section ticket online. Drivers using the fast lane (green lane) without a valid section ticket risk being fined!
Fines for Unpaid Tolls
In Austria, drivers using toll roads without a valid motorway vignette or section ticket risk a fine of:
- for four-wheeled vehicles - €120
- for two-wheeled vehicles - 65 €
The fine for missing a vignette must be paid directly to the police officer during a roadside check. Drivers who refuse to pay face legal proceedings and a fine of up to €3,000. It's also important to remember that tampering with vignette data (especially with adhesive vignettes) carries a fine twice as high as that for a missing vignette — €240 for passenger cars and €130 for motorcycles.
