Austrian Road Tolls System & Map

Road tolls in Austria apply to most motorways and expressways. The toll system in Austria is divided into:
- e-vignettes - for vehicles with a maximum permissible weight of up to 3.5 tonnes,
- e-toll (GO) - for vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes.
The amount of the toll depends on the type of vehicle, as well as the route or tunnel you are travelling on.
The toll system in Austria is managed by ASFiNAG (German: Autobahnen und Schnellstraßen Finanzierungs Aktiengesellschaft).

Multi-trip pass in Austria
You can pay the tolls for each journey or purchase a pass.
A multi-trip pass is valid for one year from activation and allows you to make any number of trips on
the selected route.
There are usually two ways to pay for toll sections:
- at the entrance gates,
- by activating the FLEX service in advance (this allows you to conveniently use all toll sections).
Which sections of motorways in Austria are toll-free?
Some Austrian routes are toll-free and do not require payment for use. The following motorways in Austria are free of charge:
- A1 (Westautobahn) – from the border (Walserberg) to the Salzburg Nord junction,
- A12 (Inntalautobahn) – from the border (Kufstein) to the Kufstein-Süd exit,
- A14 (Rheintalautobahn) – from the border (Hörbranz) to the Hohenems junction,
- A26 (Linzer Autobahn) – until it connects with the A7 (tolls will apply once the Linz-Hummelhof link road is open).
How to pay for Austrian motorways offline?
If you want to buy a vignette in person, you can do so in several places:
- at petrol stations,
- at sales points on the border.
However, the fastest and easiest way to pay for road tolls in Austria is to buy online – on the Autopay website or app.
Good to know
The Streckenmaut toll applies only to a specific route and does not entitle you to use the entire motorway network.
Road tolls in Austria | Vehicles < 3.5 tonnes
In Austria, an e-vignette is mandatory for vehicles with a maximum permissible weight of up to 3.5 tonnes and motorcycles.
It is advisable to purchase a vignette before entering toll sections. Remember this, as failure to do so may result in a heavy fine.
Austrian road tolls are available both as a sticker for the windscreen and in electronic form. Both options can be purchased for:
- 1 day,
- 10 days,
- 2 months,
- 1 year.

Road tolls in Austria | Vehicles ≥ 3.5 tonnes
In Austria, all vehicles with a maximum permissible weight of over 3.5 tonnes are subject to the GO-Maut toll system, i.e. tolls.
You can pay for using motorways and expressways via the GO-Box device.
How to pay Austrian tolls?
You can pay the road toll in two ways:
- Pre-pay – by topping up your GO-Box account before starting your journey.
- Post-pay – by paying the invoice issued after the journey.
Where can I buy an OBU GO-Box on-board unit in Austria?
You can buy a GO-Box device at border crossings and at special points of sale located along major European routes.
You will receive the GO-Box device immediately upon presentation of your registration certificate and payment of a deposit of approximately €80 (€75 to be used and €5 service fee).
When returning the GO-Box device, the unused amount will be refunded, with only a system fee of €5 being charged.
The GO-Box device is valid for two years from the last pre-pay balance top-up. In the case of deferred payment (post-pay), the device is valid until the battery runs out.
How much is the road toll per kilometre in Austria?
The toll rate in Austria depends, among other things, on the number of axles the vehicle has, the distance travelled and the emission class.
For example, for a vehicle weighing over 3.5 tonnes, with two axles, EURO VI standard and CO2 emission class 1, a trip from Vienna to Salzburg (about 300 km) costs around €69,20. The same trip for a EURO III vehicle costs around €86,50.
You can quickly and easily calculate the exact cost of your journey using one of the calculators available online
Road Tolls Austria | Discounts and Exemptions
In Austria, the following are exempt from road tolls:
- disabled persons with a card marked ‘disability preventing use of public transport’,
- humanitarian transport,
- uniformed services and emergency vehicles (police, military, fire brigade).
Discounts are also available in Austria for electric or hydrogen-powered trucks and buses. They pay only 25% of the standard rate, i.e. ¼ of the toll applicable to a EURO VI combustion engine vehicle.
In addition, from 2025, buses can obtain an additional 25% reduction in CO2 emission costs, after prior registration with ASFiNAG.
Toll control in Austria
ASFINAG employees regularly check tolls using cameras and mobile controls. They are also authorised to impose fines if the check reveals any irregularities. Tolls can also be checked by the police during routine road checks.
In Austria, checks on motorways and expressways are carried out in several ways:
- Stationary cameras – Cameras (AVK) are installed on toll sections, which automatically recognise number plates and check whether you have purchased the appropriate vignette.
- Mobile checks – The Service und Kontrolldienst (SKD) inspection service carries out routine checks in car parks or directly on the roads, also using cameras. During the check, the Austrian authorities may ask you to show documents such as your identity card or vehicle registration certificate.
- Portable control cameras – these are set up on toll roads but change their location regularly. It is difficult to predict where they are, but they change their location approximately every two weeks.
Low-emission zones and environmental stickers in Austria
Low-emission zones are areas with restricted exhaust emissions.
Only vehicles that meet the relevant standards – i.e. those with a special environmental sticker – are allowed to enter these areas.
Austria has so far introduced 8 main environmental zones, most of which require a Euro 3 sticker to enter:
- Burgenland,
- Upper Austria,
- Lower Austria,
- Styria,
- Außerfern,
- Linz,
- Tyrol,
- Vienna,
Austrian stickers correspond to European emission standards, so there are six of them – as many as there are Euro standards. You can see what they look like in the graphic below:

Good to know
Please note that driving in low-emission zones in Austria without the appropriate sticker may result in a very high fine.
