Placing and Editing Orders
Bulgarian Vignettes Placing orders
A Bulgarian vignette can be purchased up to 30 days before your planned trip – ideally online 1–2 days before travelling. This helps you avoid problems on the road (e.g. with a terminal or payment card). To buy a vignette in our service, you need to provide:
- the vehicle's registration number (without dashes or spaces),
- the country of registration,
- the vignette's start date.
Paying for an order does not always mean you can enter Bulgaria immediately. Wait until you receive the e-vignette confirmation (PDF). You will usually receive the confirmation within 15 minutes of payment.
Travelling by motorcycle? In Bulgaria, motorcycles are exempt from the vignette requirement. The exemption does not require an application.
Bulgarian Vignettes Editing and refunding vignettes
After purchase, you cannot edit the e-vignette details (there is no option to change the start date, transfer it to another vehicle or cancel the purchase). In case of an error, you must buy a new vignette with the correct details – we encourage you to enter your data carefully. Under Bulgarian law (Article 10a(3a) of the Road Act), the owner or user of the vehicle is responsible for incorrectly provided data (registration number, vehicle category or validity period) – in such a case, the vignette charge is deemed not to have been paid. Checks and Fines in Bulgaria
Vignette validity checks How are vignettes checked?
Vignette usage is monitored by camera systems and mobile patrols. The road network is supervised by approximately 295 fixed cameras and 105 control vehicles operating around the clock. The system verifies the registration number and checks whether the charge has been paid and whether the correct category has been selected. Checks are carried out by employees of the National Toll Administration, the Ministry of the Interior, and – when leaving the country – officers of the Customs Agency.
Bulgarian Vignettes Fines and surcharges
The lack of a valid vignette (vehicles up to 3,5 t) may result in a penalty charge:
- Fines in Bulgaria range from 300 BGN to 3000 BGN (approx. €150–€1,500).
- For a first offence, a compensatory fee (~€36) and the purchase of a vignette on the spot are possible.
Under the amendment to the Road Traffic Act, drivers are not held liable for the lack of an e-vignette more than three times within a single year. If a vehicle is recorded three times in a given calendar year as using toll roads without a valid vignette, subsequent instances of travelling without a vignette will not be treated as an offence and will not be subject to further sanctions.
Note!
To avoid a fine, check your vehicle category and validity period before purchase. Make sure the registration details match your vehicle documents.

Frequently Asked Questions | FAQ
Who is exempt from tolls in Bulgaria?
In Bulgaria, exemptions apply to motorcycles and certain people with disabilities or families with children with disabilities – following a prior application.
How do I enter special characters in registration numbers?
The registration number must be entered in uppercase, without spaces, dashes or dots. Standard registration plates in Bulgaria contain letters common to both the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. The system accepts both Cyrillic and Latin characters, provided they fully match the registration plate. You can replace the characters Č, Ć, Ž, Š, Đ with C, C, Z, S, D respectively. The characters Ä, Ö, Ü must remain unchanged.
Do I need to print my vignette?
No. After purchase, you will receive a download link for your vignette by email. There is no need to print the vignette – checks are carried out by scanning registration plates.
Do I need to buy a vignette for a rental car?
If the car was rented in Bulgaria, the rental company usually provides a valid vignette, but it is worth checking. If rented abroad, you must buy the vignette yourself.
Can a vignette be transferred to another car?
No. Each vignette is assigned to a single vehicle and cannot be transferred or refunded.
