Toll sections in Hungary
Hungary vignettes for vehicles up to 3,5 tonnes are valid on both motorways and expressways. When entering a toll road, you must already have an active vignette, so it is worth buying it before you set off. Check the map of toll roads below.

In Hungary, toll-free roads include all local roads (municipal, county) as well as certain sections of expressways and motorways, including the M4 (airport), the M6 (Pécs), parts of the Budapest ring road and the M8 and M9 bypasses. For people travelling from abroad, determining whether they are currently on a toll section or not can be tricky, which is why buying a vignette is recommended.

Types and validity of Hungarian vignettes

In Hungary, 4 types of e-vignettes are available according to the validity period: the 1-day vignette, the 10-day vignette, the 30-day vignette and the “annual” vignette for the given calendar year. Below we present the rules for calculating validity:
Vignette for a selected day (1-day)
The “one-day” vignette is valid on the day selected in the order, until 23:59 of that day. This means that when buying a vignette “for today”, we accept that the vignette will be valid until the end of that day, i.e. less than a full 24 hours. When buying a one-day vignette with a future start date, it will be valid from 00:01 to 23:59 of the selected day.
10-day vignette
The Hungarian 10-day vignette is valid from the day selected in the order + 9 consecutive days, until 23:59 of the last day. If the validity in the order is set to “from today”, the vignette starts its validity from the moment it is purchased in the system and ends according to the rule above.
1-month vignette
Valid from the day selected in the order until 23:59 of the same day of the following month. If the month in which the vignette's validity expires does not have that day, the vignette expires on the last day of the month at 23:59.
“Annual” vignette
The Hungary “annual” vignette has a fixed expiry date, which ends on 31-01 of the following year. This means that when buying an annual vignette towards the end of the year, its validity will in reality last only a few months. Due to the high price, towards the end of the year it is worth considering buying several vignettes with a shorter validity period.
Types of vignettes Choosing the right vehicle category
When buying a vignette for Hungary, you should pay particular attention to the vehicle category. Vehicles up to 3,5 tonnes have been divided into two subgroups — passenger vehicles (category D1) and vehicles registered as goods vehicles (category D2). For each of them, the appropriate vignette must be purchased to avoid receiving a fine. Below we present the full table of vignette types:

Heavier vehicles (over 3,5 tonnes) use the distance-based HU-GO system (charged per kilometre driven). HU-GO charges are not available in our service.
Campers and caravans Choosing the vignette
When travelling by camper or with a caravan in Hungary, you must correctly choose the vignette category. The data from the vehicle registration document is crucial:
- J — vehicle category (e.g. M1, N1),
- F.1 — maximum permissible laden mass (GVW),
- S.1 — number of seats including the driver.
Campers up to 3,5 t use the vignettes assigned to their category (D1 or D2), while campers over 3,5 t are charged through the HU-GO system (charge per kilometre).

For trailers attached to campers, a simple rule applies:
- Camper D1 → trailer with no surcharge,
- Camper D2 → trailer requires a U vignette,
- Camper over 3,5 t → HU-GO.
Important!
If your camper weighs up to 3,5 t but field “J” shows N1/N1G (goods vehicle), the D2 vignette applies. Always check the data in the vehicle registration document.

It is best to buy a vignette for driving on Hungarian roads online before departure, to avoid problems along the way (e.g. with a terminal or card). To buy a vignette in our service, you must provide:
- the vehicle registration number,
- the country of registration,
- the vignette start date.
Paying for the order does not always mean you can immediately drive on toll roads. Wait until you receive the confirmation that the toll has been paid (the e-vignette). In most cases you will receive the confirmation within about 15 minutes of payment.

Inspections and fines in Hungary
Checking vignette validity How are vignettes checked?
The monitoring system automatically detects vehicles without a valid vignette using cameras (fixed and mobile) that scan the plates and compare them with a central database. Police patrols also verify vignettes using mobile devices. The most common reason for a fine in Hungary is incorrectly matching the vehicle category to the vignette type (D1 and D2). When ordering a vignette, pay particular attention to the differences between these categories.
After inspecting a vehicle and finding a missing vignette or an incorrect match of the vignette to the vehicle, the Hungarian system automatically issues a fine. The next step is to hand over/sell this debt to debt collection companies operating in Europe, which enforce the payment. Committing an offence is equivalent to receiving a fine. After receiving it, you should follow the instructions contained in the fine.
Hungary Vignettes Fines and surcharges
In 2024, Hungary introduced a more rigorous surcharge system. The penalties range from 26 640 HUF to 91 780 HUF. Hungarian fines are divided into three categories in accordance with the amended regulations:
- Moderate penalty — if, after detecting an unauthorised journey, no further breach occurred or the breach is limited to the first 2 hours from detection.
- Standard penalty — if a repeat breach occurred between the 2nd and 4th hour from the first detection, but not after the 4th hour.
- High penalty — if breaches were repeated between the 4th and 8th hour from the first detection.
The system is based on the principle of whether further breaches occurred within 8 hours of the first detection.
Good news: if you buy the wrong category of HU vignette, you only pay the difference.

To correctly determine the vehicle category and the vignette type, check the entries in the vehicle registration document. If your vehicle with a GVW of up to 3,5 tonnes is registered as a goods vehicle, you must buy a vignette for category D2 vehicles.

Do I have to print the Hungarian vignette?
No. You will receive a PDF file by email, which you can keep on your phone for any possible inspection.
Who is exempt from fees in Hungary?
In Hungary, those exempt from the e-vignette include the military, road maintenance services, the police, the customs service and NATO forces.
Can I transfer the Hungarian vignette to another car?
Only if the previous vehicle was sold, stolen or deregistered. The transfer is strictly limited to the same vehicle class. An application must be submitted and sent to the head office in Hungary.
I ride a motorcycle — can I buy a D1 vignette instead of D1M?
No. Motorcycles use the separate D1M category, which must be purchased. It is also more favourable in terms of price. Choosing the wrong category for the vehicle may result in a fine.
What is the difference between category D1 and category D2 in Hungary?
In Hungary, cars up to 3,5 tonnes have been divided into 2 categories — D1 and D2. D1 is the category intended for vehicles registered as passenger cars, with a maximum of 7 seats, which are not used for transporting goods (e.g. pickup).
Category D2 is intended for vehicles up to 3,5 tonnes registered as goods vehicles or used for transporting goods or intended for more than 7 passengers.
What type of vignette do I need for a camper?
It depends on the data in the vehicle registration document:
- Camper up to 3,5 t and max. 7 seats → category D1,
- Camper up to 3,5 t with 7–9 seats or marked N1/N1G → D2,
- Camper over 3,5 t → HU-GO system (charge per kilometre).
Does a caravan require a separate vignette?
It depends on the category of the towing vehicle: D1 vehicle → trailer with no vignette, D2 vehicle → category U vignette required, vehicle in HU-GO → charge according to the total number of axles of the combination.
I have an M1 camper but with 8 seats — which vignette for Hungary?
In this case the D2 vignette applies, because the number of seats exceeds 7.
What if I get the vignette category wrong?
If you got the vignette category wrong, you may receive a fine. If your mistake was buying a lower category when it should have been higher (e.g. you bought category D1 instead of D2), the fine will almost certainly be issued and sent to your address.
Can I edit or cancel a purchased vignette?
No, the Hungarian system does not allow data changes or refunds.
Do I need a vignette if I am only driving a few kilometres of motorway?
Yes. Every section of a Hungarian toll road requires a valid vignette before entering the toll section.
What should I do if I did not receive the vignette confirmation?
Check the SPAM folder and wait about 15 minutes. If the confirmation does not arrive, contact customer service, providing the registration number and the time of purchase.
Can the control systems issue a fine to the owner of a vehicle registered outside Hungary?
Yes. Fines from Hungary are passed on to debt collection companies operating in the EU and can be enforced throughout Europe.
