Road Tolls Hungary | Driver's Guide 2025
Planning a trip across Hungary and wondering how to pay for motorways? Hungary runs two toll systems: e-matrica and HU-GO. Not sure which one applies to you? Or would you like to know where to purchase an OBU on-board unit? You’ll find everything you need in this guide.
Road tolls in Hungary | Map
In Hungary, tolls apply on motorways and expressways.
The electronic toll system is split into:
- E-vignettes (e-matrica) - for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and motorcycles,
- E-Toll (HU-GO) - for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.
Check which roads are tolled on the map below:

Which motorway sections in Hungary are toll-free?
Some Hungarian motorway and expressway sections are free of charge, typically to improve access to cities and key locations:
- M60 (Pécs bypass) - south-west bypass between roads 58 and 5826,
- M4 (airport access) - between Vecsés and the road leading to Budapest Liszt Ferenc Airport,
- M8 - entire route,
- M80 - entire route,
- M9 - section between National Road 6 and Road 51, plus the Kaposvár bypass (M9 signed as National Road 61).
Good to know
Since 2024 the entire Budapest ring road M0 is tolled (previously some sections were exempt). Exemptions on several new routes (e.g. parts of M4, M30, M31, M44) have also been removed.
How to pay Hungarian motorways offline?
If you’d like to buy a vignette in person, you can do so at:
- petrol stations,
- post offices,
- self-service kiosks.
However, the fastest and easiest way is to buy online - on the Autopay website or in the Autopay app
Road tolls in Hungary | Vehicles < 3.5 tonnes
In Hungary, a digital vignette is mandatory for motorcycles, passenger cars, and light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes (including campervans).
There are five vignette types:
- 1-day,
- 10-day,
- Monthly,
- Annual (national),
- Annual (regional/county).
Not everybody knows, but within the Hungarian toll system, you can also buy a regional (county) annual vignette. It’s ideal if you only use specific sections and don’t need nationwide coverage.
Vehicle Category | 1-Day | 10-Day | Monthly | Annual (national) | Annual (regional) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
D1M | 2 660 Ft (≈ €6.50) | 3 310 Ft (≈ €8) | 5 360 Ft (≈ €13) | 59 210 Ft (≈ €146) | 6 890 Ft (≈ €17) |
D1 | 5 320 Ft (≈ €13) | 6 620 Ft (≈ €16) | 10 710 Ft (≈ €26) | 59 210 Ft (≈ €146) | 6 890 Ft (≈ €17) |
D2 | 7 560 Ft (≈ €18.50) | 9 630 Ft (≈ €24) | 15 170 Ft (≈ €37) | 84 040 Ft (≈ €207) | 13 780 Ft (≈ €34) |
U | 5 320 Ft (≈ €13) | 6 620 Ft (≈ €16) | 10 710 Ft (≈ €26) | 59 210 Ft (≈ €146) | 6 890 Ft (≈ €17) |
Good to know
A single county vignette is significantly cheaper than a full annual. From 2024, campervans and buses over 3.5 tonnes pay via HU-GO; e-vignettes apply only to cars and motorcycles.
Road tolls in Hungary | Vehicles ≥ 3.5 tonnes
Hungarian tolls for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes (primarily HGVs) are distance-based on tolled sections and depend on:
- road type,
- vehicle category,
- number of axles,
- emission standard.
Vehicles are classified into J2, J3, J4, J5 - the higher the class, the higher the per-km rate. Emission class also matters: higher EURO classes (e.g. Euro 5, Euro 6) pay lower rates. If you cannot provide reliable emission documentation, the system assumes Euro 0 and charges the highest rate.
Good to know
Category J5 (5+ axles) was introduced on 1 January 2024. J4 covers four-axle vehicles only.
How to pay HU-GO in Hungary?
You have two options:
- Single (relation) ticket - no HU-GO account required,
- On-board unit (OBU) - requires registration.
For a single ticket, you specify:
- route sections (entry/exit points),
- vehicle registration number and country,
- number of axles,
- emission class.
Pay before entering the tolled section. If your plans change, the route on a purchased ticket cannot be edited - you must buy a new one.
Important
From 1 February 2025 a relation ticket is valid for 120 minutes from purchase (not the whole day). If your journey takes longer, you must buy another ticket.
With an OBU, you open a HU-GO account and top it up (pre-paid). The device tracks your route via GPS and charges you automatically for the exact distance driven - no need to pre-plan.
Note: since 2024, if you use pre-paid in HU-GO, settlement is only via OBU. Post-paid ticket purchase from the account has been discontinued.
Where to buy an OBU?
Common OBU models in Hungary include OBU One, Webbase OBU Easy, i-Cell OBU S550 and EETS multi-system devices. Hungary operates an open-market model with multiple licensed providers, e.g.:
- Secret Control
- SafeFleet
- SkyGuard
- iCell
- WebEye
International EETS operators are also present (e.g., Telepass, Toll4Europe, E100). All devices must be certified by NÚSZ to work with HU-GO.
Prices vary by provider and features. Simple mobile pre-paid units start around 40-60k HUF (≈ €100-150).
Good to know
In Hungary the OBU generally becomes the user’s property - unlike in Slovakia, where devices are typically rented.
Where to place the OBU?
Register the device in HU-GO and assign it to your vehicle before use.
- Mobile (portable) - plug into the cigarette lighter and place on the windscreen or dashboard,
- Integrated (hard-wired) - installed permanently with external GPS/GSM antennas (professional fitting required).
How much is the toll per kilometre in Hungary?
The per-km rate depends on:
- distance,
- vehicle category (axles),
- road type,
- charges for air pollution, noise, and CO₂ emissions.
Example (2025): a HGV >3.5 t, EURO IV, category J2, from Győr to Pécs (~270 km) costs 17 732 HUF (≈ €44).
You can estimate your exact cost using the Hungarian toll calculator.
Road tolls Hungary | Discounts and exemptions
The Hungarian system is fairly uniform: in principle, all vehicles must pay to use tolled roads.
Unlike some countries, there are no exemptions for “eco” vehicles. Electric and hybrid cars require vignettes on the same basis as combustion vehicles. The only “incentive” is within HU-GO for HGVs, where higher EURO classes attract lower per-km rates.
Also, unlike Slovakia, Hungarian motorways do not offer general toll exemptions for disabled drivers. Exemptions apply mainly to state, emergency, and public service vehicles.
Toll control in Hungary
The system operator is NÚSZ, while enforcement is handled by the police and customs-tax authorities. Cameras and control stations record each passage and verify, via the database, whether a valid vignette or HU-GO payment exists for the number plate.
If you travel without paying, an administrative fine is issued. For passenger cars this is 26 640 HUF (≈ €67). For HGVs, fines are much higher - up to 281 000 HUF (≈ €700).

Hungary uses the e-matrica system for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and HU-GO for heavier vehicles. HU-GO requires either a relation ticket or an OBU device. Enforcement is strict, and travelling without payment may result in significant fines. To avoid issues, buy your vignette via Autopay or register and set up your HU-GO device before you set off.
Have a great trip!
