Road tolls in Slovenia | Vehicles over 3,5 tonnes

All vehicles with a maximum permissible weight over 3,5 tonnes, meaning classes R2, R3 and R4, are subject to the Slovenian electronic toll system DarsGO. Tolls are charged automatically via an on-board unit that records the distance travelled.

Further official information about the system, registration and user account is available on DarsGO.

How to pay Slovenian e-toll (DarsGO)?

You can choose between two settlement methods:

  • Prepaid – top up your unit with the selected amount before travel,
  • Postpaid – automatic settlement after the journey for companies with a contract.

Payments can be made using:

  • fuel cards such as UTA, DKV, Shell or Eurowag,
  • credit or debit cards,
  • cash at DarsGO service points.

Where to buy a DarsGO on-board unit?

You can register a DarsGO unit at any DarsGO service point in Slovenia. You usually need:

  • a VAT number,
  • an email address,
  • vehicle documents, including the registration certificate and proof of EURO emission class.

Alternatively, it is possible to register online via e-DarsGO and collect the unit at a service point or have it sent by post for EU residents.

Which category does my vehicle belong to?

According to DARS, the light-vehicle system is divided into 3 categories:

  • 1A – single-track vehicles with a track width of up to 50 cm,
  • 2A – four-wheel vehicles with a gross vehicle weight up to 3,5 tonnes and a height above the front axle of up to 1,3 m,
  • 2B – four-wheel vehicles with a maximum permissible weight up to 3,5 tonnes and a height above the front axle of more than 1,3 m.

If you are unsure which category applies to your vehicle, the official DARS list of measured vehicles may help.

How much is the toll per kilometre in Slovenia?

The price per kilometre depends on:

  • distance travelled,
  • vehicle category based on the number of axles,
  • EURO emission class.

For example, in 2026 a lorry over 3,5 tonnes with two axles and EURO 4 travelling from Maribor to Ljubljana, about 125 km, may pay around €25. Indicative rates range from about €0.16 per kilometre for EURO 6 to around €0.25 per kilometre for EURO 0.

You can estimate the route cost using the official DarsGO toll calculator.

Road tolls in Slovenia | Discounts and exemptions

The following vehicles are exempt from tolls in Slovenia:

  • special-rights and escort vehicles registered in Slovenia,
  • vehicles of the Slovenian Armed Forces,
  • foreign military vehicles taking part in peacekeeping missions,
  • vehicles carrying humanitarian aid,
  • vehicles owned by the toll-road operator DARS.

Electric vehicles do not receive general exemptions. However, partial refunds are possible for:

  • disabled drivers – they may pay the class 2A rate for a class 2B vehicle,
  • large families – if conditions are met, they may claim a partial refund on a class 2B vignette.

Official rules on these refund schemes are available on the DARS exemptions page.

Toll control in Slovenia

The Slovenian toll network is divided into 128 toll-control sections. Compliance is checked by DARS with the support of state authorities, especially the financial administration and the police. Control gantries using microwave technology automatically detect vehicles equipped with a DarsGO unit.

Driving without a valid vignette or on-board unit may result in a fine from €300 to €800, and in more serious cases up to €1,200.

Additional official guidance is available in the DARS FAQ.
