Road tolls in Austria | Map
Tolls apply to most motorways and expressways in Austria.
Unlike Germany, where most motorways are free for passenger cars, Austria uses a toll system based on:
- digital vignette for vehicles with a technically permissible maximum laden mass of up to 3.5 tonnes,
- GO toll for vehicles with a technically permissible maximum laden mass of more than 3.5 tonnes.
The amount of the toll depends on the vehicle type and on the route or tunnel you use.
The toll system in Austria is managed by ASFINAG (Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft).
Autopay Mobility is a licensed seller of Austrian vignettes and section toll tickets.
Additional road tolls in Austria | Tunnels
Even if you already have a valid vignette, some tunnels and Alpine passes are subject to an extra toll. This is called a section toll. It applies to selected special toll routes with separate tariffs and payment rules.
The following routes are subject to a section toll:
- A9 – Bosruck Tunnel and Gleinalm Tunnel
- A10 – Tauern Tunnel and Katschberg Tunnel
- A11 – Karawanken Tunnel
- A13 – Brenner Motorway
- S16 – Arlberg Tunnel
Tunnels cost extra!

Multi-trip pass in Austria (FLEX)
You can either pay the toll for each journey separately or buy a multi-trip pass.
The multi-trip pass is valid for one year from activation and allows an unlimited number of trips on the selected route.
For section toll routes in Austria, there are generally two ways to pay:
- at the toll station on site,
- by activating the FLEX service in advance, which allows automatic and more convenient use of toll sections.
Flex toll is a digital payment system for selected toll routes in Austria, such as tunnels and Alpine passes. It is designed for drivers of vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes who want to use these routes conveniently without stopping at the toll station.
Which motorways in Austria are toll-free?
Some Austrian motorway sections are free of charge.
The toll-free roads in Austria include:
- A1 (West Motorway) between the state border at Walserberg and the Salzburg Nord junction
- A12 (Inntal Motorway) between the state border near Kufstein and the Kufstein-Süd junction
- A14 (Rheintal/Walgau Motorway) between the state border near Hörbranz and the Hohenems junction
- A26 (Linzer Autobahn) until its connection to the A7 is completed
How can you pay Austrian motorway tolls offline?
If you want to buy a vignette in person, this is possible at several locations:
- at petrol stations,
- at sales points near the border.
The fastest and easiest way to pay tolls in Austria, however, is to buy online via the Autopay website or Mobile Application Autopay.
Good to know
The section toll only applies to a specific route and does not entitle you to use the entire Austrian motorway network.
Road tolls in Austria | Vehicles < 3.5 tonnes
In Austria, a digital vignette is mandatory for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and for motorcycles.
The 2026 sticker vignette is fire-red:
If you do not want to buy online, you can still purchase the vignette offline at points of sale such as petrol stations, tobacconists or toll outlets. The digital product is then registered in the system.
It is recommended to buy the vignette before entering a toll road. Please remember this, as driving without one can result in a substantial fine.
For Austria, both a sticker vignette and a digital vignette are available. Here are the puchasing likns to each czech e-vignette
| Vignette type | Vehicle | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Austria vignette for 1 day | Motorcycle | 3.80 € |
| Austria vignette for 10 days | Motorcycle | 5.10 € |
| Austria vignette for 1 day | Car up to 3,5 t | 9.60 € |
| Austria vignette for 10 days | Car up to 3,5 t | 12.80 € |
Last sticker vignette: 2026!
The sticker vignette will be available for the last time for the 2026 vignette year. From 2027 onwards, Austria will use only the digital vignette.
How much do Austrian toll products cost in 2026?
These are the current rates for 2026:
| Vehicle type | 1 day | 10 days | 2 months | Year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes | €9.30 | €12.40 | €31.10 | €103.80 |
| Motorcycles | €3.70 | €4.90 | €12.40 | €41.50 |
How do you check whether an Austrian vignette is valid?
The easiest way is to use the official ASFINAG system.
The system is free and publicly accessible. Simply enter the vehicle registration number and the country of registration. You will then see whether a valid digital vignette or section toll product is registered for the vehicle and for which period it is valid.
How long does vignette activation take?
The activation time depends on how and where you buy the vignette:
- online-purchased 2-month and annual vignettes usually become valid only after 18 days because of the statutory withdrawal period,
- vignettes bought at sales outlets or through partners can be valid immediately,
- 1-day and 10-day vignettes bought online can also be valid immediately.
Good to know
In Austria, the 1-day vignette is available only in digital form.
Road tolls in Austria | Vehicles ≥ 3.5 tonnes
The Austrian toll for heavy vehicles is calculated through the GO toll system and applies to all vehicles with a technically permissible maximum laden mass of more than 3.5 tonnes.
Tolls are charged via an on-board device called the GO-Box and apply to journeys on motorways and expressways.
How do you pay tolls in Austria?
You can pay in two ways:
- Pre-pay – by topping up the GO-Box account before the journey.
- Post-pay – by paying the invoice issued after the trip.
Good to know
In Austria, the toll system for motorhomes depends on the technically permissible maximum laden mass. Motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes use the vignette system like passenger cars. Motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes use the GO toll system with a GO-Box, where charges are calculated per kilometre.
Where can you get a GO-Box in Austria?
The GO-Box is available at border crossings and at dedicated sales points along major European routes.
You receive the GO-Box immediately after presenting the vehicle registration certificate and paying the applicable issue and setup charges according to the official GO toll rules.
The exact terms of issue, prepaid top-up and postpaid activation are published on the official GO-Box page.

How much is the toll per kilometre in Austria?
The Austrian toll depends on factors such as the number of axles, the distance travelled and the vehicle’s emissions category.
For example, the route from Vienna to Salzburg of around 300 km costs roughly around €73 for a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes with two axles, EURO VI and CO₂ class 1. The same journey for a EURO III vehicle costs roughly around €86.50.
You can calculate the exact cost of your journey using the official GO toll information published by go-maut.at.
Road tolls in Austria | Discounts and exemptions
In Austria, the following can be exempt from tolls in specific cases:
- people with disabilities who hold the relevant official proof of entitlement,
- humanitarian aid transport,
- emergency and uniformed service vehicles such as police, military and fire brigade vehicles.
Austria also offers reductions for electric and hydrogen-powered lorries and buses. They pay only 25% of the standard rate, that is, one quarter of the toll charged for a EURO VI combustion-engine vehicle.
In addition, from 2026, buses may receive an extra 25% reduction in CO₂ emission costs after prior registration with ASFINAG.
Toll checks in Austria
ASFINAG staff regularly carry out toll checks using cameras and mobile controls. They are authorised to impose penalties if irregularities are found. Police may also check toll compliance during routine road inspections.
In Austria, toll checks on motorways and expressways are carried out in several ways:
- Stationary cameras – fixed camera systems automatically recognise number plates and check whether the correct toll product is linked to the vehicle.
- Mobile checks – inspection services perform routine checks in car parks or directly on the roads, also with camera support. During a control, the authorities may ask to see documents such as an ID card or vehicle registration certificate.
- Portable control cameras – these are set up on toll roads and regularly change location.
Penalties
| Violation | Indicative penalty |
|---|---|
| no valid vignette for vehicles ≤ 3.5 t | around €120–€200 |
| no section toll paid | around €120–€240 |
| no GO toll paid for vehicles > 3.5 t without an active GO-Box | around €240 |
| incorrect GO toll data, such as wrong axle setting | around €240 |
| manipulation of the vignette or toll product | around €240 |
| failure to pay the substitute toll | €300–€3,000 in administrative proceedings |
Environmental zones and emissions stickers in Austria
Environmental zones are areas with restricted pollutant emissions.
Only vehicles meeting the relevant requirements may enter these areas, usually identified by an emissions sticker.
Austria currently has eight major environmental zones where, in many cases, at least a Euro 3 sticker is required:
| Burgenland | Upper Austria |
| Lower Austria | Styria |
| Außerfern | Linz |
| Tyrol | Vienna |
Austrian stickers correspond to the European emission standards, so there are six of them in total. You can see their appearance in the graphic below:
Good to know
Please note that driving in an Austrian environmental zone without the required sticker can lead to a significant fine.
