Tolls in Bulgaria apply to all motorways and most national roads. The system is divided into:

  • E-vignettes – for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes,
  • BG Toll – for vehicles 3.5 tonnes and above.

Tolls in Bulgaria are administered by a specialised department within the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA), known as the National Toll Administration.

How to pay tolls in Bulgaria | Route pass

A route pass is the easiest way for occasional travel. You select start and end points (with up to 4 intermediate stops) and pay upfront for that route. Available online, at self-service terminals, or BG Toll partner stations (e.g. petrol stations).

How to pay tolls in Bulgaria | OBU

An OBU records your vehicle details and transmits journey data via GPS/GNSS. Settlement can be pre-paid or post-paid (e.g. via fuel card). TollPass OBUs can be ordered online or from distribution points. The device is rented against a deposit.

How to pay tolls in Bulgaria | GPS & EETS

If your truck already has a GPS monitoring system, you may use it if integrated with an accredited BG Toll provider. Alternatively, you can use an EETS device (European Electronic Toll Service), which allows road charges across multiple countries with a single contract and OBU (e.g. TollPass EUROBOX, DKV BOX Europe, Telepass SAT, Eurowag, UTA One, Toll4Europe).

How much is the toll per kilometre in Bulgaria?

Rates vary based on road type, vehicle weight and class, number of axles, and EURO emission standard. Use the official BG Toll calculator to estimate your journey cost.

Road tolls in Bulgaria | Discounts and exemptions

Not many people know, but in Bulgaria, motorcycles are fully exempt from road tolls.

Moreover, eco-friendly HGVs (e.g. electric, CNG) have to pay only 50% of the cleanest diesel tariff. However, that's not the end.

Disabled persons can also register one personal car for exemption.

Toll control in Bulgaria

The system is supervised by the National Road Infrastructure Agency (API) via fixed cameras and mobile patrols.

Number plates are checked automatically against the toll database.

Driving without a valid vignette, route ticket, or OBU registration results in fines between €77 and €383. Severe violations (e.g. falsifying EURO class) may cost up to 2,500 BGN (≈ €1,280).

Road tolls Bulgaria | Summary

In Bulgaria, all motorways and national roads are tolled. Vehicles up to 3.5 t require an e-vignette, while heavier vehicles use BG Toll, charged per kilometre. The easiest way is to buy a vignette online in advance – Autopay makes it simple and fast. Don’t forget about additional charges on the Danube bridges.
