How do you pay Hungarian motorways offline?

If you want to buy a vignette in person, you can usually do so at:

  • petrol stations,
  • post offices,
  • self-service kiosks.

Road tolls in Hungary | Vehicles < 3.5 tonnes

In Hungary, a digital vignette is mandatory for motorcycles, passenger cars and light vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, including many campervans.

There are five main vignette types:

  • 1-day,
  • 10-day,
  • monthly,
  • annual national,
  • annual regional (county).

One of the most useful options in the Hungarian system is the county annual vignette. It can be a practical solution if you regularly drive only in selected regions and do not need nationwide coverage.

A single county vignette is much cheaper than a full national annual vignette. Official rates for 2026 are published by the National Toll Payment Service and are valid from 1 January 2026.

Can you buy the annual vignette in advance?

Yes. The National Toll Payment Service usually makes annual national and annual regional vignettes available before the start of the new toll year. The official website also explains their validity period. All you have to do is to click here to buy hungarian annual vignette.

Road tolls in Hungary | Vehicles ≥ 3.5 tonnes

Hungarian tolls for vehicles above 3.5 tonnes are distance-based and are settled through the HU-GO system.

The amount payable depends on:

  • road type,
  • vehicle category,
  • number of axles,
  • emission class.

Vehicles are classified into J2, J3, J4 and J5. As a rule, the higher the category, the higher the toll rate per kilometre. The EURO emission class also matters: cleaner vehicles pay lower rates.

Good to know

The official HU-GO operator publishes updates on changes to toll rates and toll-road extensions on hu-go.hu. For 2026, the operator announced changes to the distance-based toll system and its rates.

How do you pay HU-GO in Hungary?

You generally have two main options:

  • route ticket for a specific route,
  • on-board unit (OBU) linked to a registered HU-GO account.

The official HU-GO website states that, from 1 February 2025, the route ticket is valid for 120 minutes from the time of purchase, not for the whole day.

Where can you get an OBU?

Hungary operates an open-market model with multiple authorised toll declaration providers and EETS providers.

The official HU-GO website explains the available declaration methods and provider-based solutions on hu-go.hu. Before choosing a device, it is best to verify whether the selected provider is officially accepted within the HU-GO system.

Where should the OBU be placed?

The device should be installed and used according to the provider’s and HU-GO’s technical instructions. Portable devices are usually placed on the windscreen or dashboard and powered from the vehicle. Hard-wired units require professional installation.

How much is the toll per kilometre in Hungary?

There is no single flat toll rate per kilometre for all heavy vehicles.

The applicable amount depends on:

  • distance travelled,
  • vehicle category,
  • number of axles,
  • road type,
  • emission class.

The official HU-GO operator publishes current toll rates on the official toll rates page, and the official toll calculator is available via utdijkalkulacio.hu.

Road tolls in Hungary | Discounts and exemptions

The Hungarian toll system is relatively uniform. In principle, vehicles must pay to use tolled roads unless they fall within specific statutory exemption categories.

There are no general vignette exemptions for electric or hybrid passenger cars simply because they are low-emission vehicles. Passenger-car vignette obligations generally remain the same regardless of powertrain.

For heavy vehicles, cleaner EURO classes may result in lower HU-GO toll rates. That is the main environmental incentive within the heavy-vehicle toll framework.

Are there special discounts for high-mileage heavy vehicles?

The official Hungarian toll rules and rate structure are published by the National Toll Payment Service and the HU-GO system operator. Before relying on any discount or operational assumption, it is best to check the latest official rules on hu-go and hunemzetiutdij.hu.

Toll control in Hungary

The system operator is NÚSZ, while enforcement is handled by the competent authorities. Cameras and control stations record road use and verify, via the central database, whether a valid vignette or HU-GO payment exists for the number plate or registered vehicle.

If you travel without paying, an administrative fine can be imposed. The amount depends on the vehicle category and type of infringement.

Good to know

Official Hungarian toll-system pages publish both current rates and rule changes, including information on unauthorised road use and the consequences of non-payment. To avoid problems, it is best to buy the vignette or complete HU-GO registration before setting off.
