In Switzerland, near the Italian border, two tunnels require separate payment:
- Munt La Schera Tunnel
- Great Saint Bernard Tunnel
The cost depends on your vehicle and the number of crossings.
Swiss Vignette Types
In Switzerland, there is only one type of vignette you can buy: the annual vignette.
It is available in 2 forms:
- Traditional windscreen sticker
- Electronic e-vignette
There are no short-term Swiss vignettes (daily, weekly or monthly).
Swiss vignette is valid for 14 months - starting from 1 December until 31 January of the following year.
Good to know:
The traditional sticker is affixed to the windscreen and assigned to a specific vehicle. If you have interchangeable plates, each car must have its own sticker. An e-vignette works differently - it is transferred to the registration number, so with interchangeable plates, you only need one.
Swiss VignettesWhat are the vignette categories?
Vehicles in Switzerland are divided into 3 categories:
Category name | Vehicle type |
---|---|
A1 | Motorcycles |
A2 | Vehicles up to 2m high |
B1 | Other vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes |
Heavier or larger vehicles need to be registered in LSVA (ger. Leistungsabhängige Schwerverkehrsabgabe).
Swiss VignettesDo campervans require a vignette?
Yes. Lighter campervans are treated in Switzerland just like a pickup or a car. If your campervan exceeds 3.5 tonnes GVW, it falls under the Swiss LSVA toll system.

Swiss VignettesEditing & Returns
In Switzerland, you cannot return a vignette once its validity period has started - regardless of whether or not your vehicle has crossed the Swiss border.
If you purchased a vignette CH in error, a new vignette must be purchased with the correct data. This is because there are only annual vignettes, which are valid from the moment of purchase.
Please note that a damaged or destroyed sticker variant of a Swiss vignette does not entitle you to a new one for free. The same goes for the e-vignettes bought by mistake.
The only exception to this is if you have made a documented double purchase of an e-vignette for the same vehicle/registration number.
In such a case, you can apply to the office for a refund for a duplicate. You will need proof of purchase of both vignettes for this.
Swiss VignettesRoad inspections
Switzerland uses a combination of manual and electronic methods to enforce motorway vignette requirements.
- Physical stickers - checked visually by officers from the Bundesamt für Zoll und Grenzsicherheit (BAZG) - during random roadside or border inspections. These officers verify that the sticker is correctly affixed to the windscreen, as there are no automated systems for detecting physical vignettes.
- E-vignettes - monitored using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, which are installed at strategic motorway locations and used by mobile patrol units. These systems scan vehicle registration plates and cross-check them against a central database managed by BAZG. BAZG agents commonly conduct border checks. Cantonal police forces use patrol vehicles equipped with ANPR systems to perform on-the-spot checks, especially on major transit routes.
BAZG operates under the Swiss Federal Department of Finance.
Swiss VignettesFines for not having a vignette CH
Driving in Switzerland without a valid vignette results in a CHF 200 fine, payable immediately to the police officer during the roadside check. Additionally, you must purchase a vignette on the spot (CHF 40).
The total penalty is around CHF 240 (around €256).
