Motorhome through Slovakia | Basic Information

Are you planning a trip but don't know which vignette for Slovakia is required for a motorhome, or what you need to know about driving a motorhome in Slovakia? Also check our article about road tolls in Slovakia. Below you will find all the essential information.

Which vignette for Slovakia is needed for a motorhome?

Slovakia uses the electronic vignette system eZnámka managed by NDS (Národná diaľničná spoločnosť). The type of vignette required for a motorhome in Slovakia depends mainly on the vehicle's weight.

Motorhomes weighing up to 3.5 tonnes are subject to the same electronic toll (eznámka) as passenger cars. Available periods:

  • 1 day – €8.10
  • 10 days – €10.80
  • 30 days – €17.10
  • 365 days – €90

If your motorhome weighs more than 3.5 tonnes, vignettes do not apply – you pay the e-mýto road toll. More details: Road tolls Slovakia.

What do you need to have in your vehicle when driving through Slovakia?

When travelling by car or motorhome through Slovakia, you must carry mandatory equipment:

  • reflective vests,
  • warning triangle,
  • fire extinguisher,
  • first aid kit,
  • spare wheel, jack and wheel wrench,
  • spare bulbs.

Good to know:

Reflective vests should be kept in the cab, not in the boot, and worn by everyone when getting out of the vehicle outside built-up areas. Full list of documents and tips: Driving through Slovakia.

What should you watch out for in Slovakia?

In general, Slovakia is a very safe country. The crime rate is low, transport and roads are safe, and with a European Health Insurance Card you can access basic medical care. Petty pickpocketing can occur – it is worth exercising ordinary caution, keeping your documents on you and watching your luggage.

You can find overnight stops at various levels of facilities – from public car parks, through short-stay zones, to fully equipped campsites.

Campsites (autocamps)

The most popular and comfortable overnight stops for motorhomes. They have full facilities: electricity, water, toilet service, showers, often a playground or restaurant. Many campsites can be found in the Tatras (e.g. Poprad, Tatranská Lomnica), by lakes and near tourist attractions.

Stellplätze – motorhome stopping places

Dedicated car parks with basic facilities: electricity, water, toilet service. Cheaper and closer to towns than campsites. They are increasingly found near spas, castles and in larger towns.

Agritourism farms and vineyards

Some farms and vineyards – particularly in the Tokaj and Small Carpathians regions – offer motorhome pitches with basic facilities. A great way to soak up the atmosphere of the region and try local produce. Sometimes the overnight stay is free in exchange for purchases from the host (wine, cheese, honey).

Motorhome through Slovakia | Parking and Overnight Stays in Slovakia

Not sure where you can park a motorhome in Slovakia, or where it is prohibited? Below you will find all the rules.

Where can and where can't you park a motorhome?

Parking a motorhome is permitted:

  • at campsites, agritourism farms and motorhome zones,
  • in regular car parks, without camping (without putting furniture and other items outside, without cooking), provided there is no ban on motorhomes entering.

Parking a motorhome is not permitted:

  • on the verges of expressways and motorways – you may only stop at rest areas and car parks,
  • on private land without the owner's permission,
  • in national parks, forests and meadows.

Can you sleep in a motorhome in a car park in Slovakia?

Yes, but there are conditions. You may stay overnight in a motorhome in public car parks, provided there is no ban on motorhomes entering or staying overnight – but without camping. Do not set out chairs, a table, an awning, etc. Only a discreet overnight stay is permitted. In motorway car parks and at petrol stations you may stay overnight as part of a driver's rest break.

Is wild sleeping permitted in Slovakia?

In Slovakia, sleeping in a motorhome in the wild is restricted and is not officially fully permitted. However, overnight stays outside protected areas – in car parks, on side roads or in smaller villages, where there is no prohibition sign – are tolerated. Some municipalities tolerate motorhomes for 1 night near tourist attractions, provided the car park is not overcrowded.

Overnight stays in the wild in the mountains and in protected areas are strictly prohibited – in national parks, nature reserves, forests and meadows. This can result in a heavy fine, especially in the mountains, where wardens frequently check protected areas.

What are the consequences of sleeping in a motorhome while driving?

Sleeping in a motorhome while the vehicle is in motion is punishable by a fine and penalty points in Slovakia. All passengers must wear seatbelts while driving. Otherwise you may receive a fine of approx. €50–100 for each person not wearing a seatbelt. The police have the right to stop the vehicle until everyone takes their seat and fastens their seatbelt.

Remember:

In the event of an accident, the insurer may refuse to pay compensation for injuries to persons who were sleeping while the vehicle was in motion or who were not wearing seatbelts.

Motorhome through SlovakiaSummary

Slovakia is an excellent choice for a motorhome holiday. Roads in Slovakia are toll roads, and motorhomes up to 3.5 tonnes require an e-vignette (eznámka). For shorter stops use stellplätze; for longer stays use fully equipped campsites (autocamps). Wild camping is officially not permitted, but one night without camping equipment, in a quiet place outside national parks, is sometimes tolerated. Worth seeing are the mountain lakes in the High Tatras, Slovak Paradise and the old town of Bratislava. Wine enthusiasts will be delighted by the Small Carpathians region and Tokaj. Have a great trip!
