How to choose the best route to Croatia?
The answer is: it depends.
Every driver has different preferences and a different driving style. Most often, however, route length and travel time are the key criteria for people setting off to Croatia.
Unfortunately, the cost of travelling to the Adriatic will always vary. This is affected not only by changing fuel prices or stopover costs, but also by the fact that everyone drives a different vehicle and plans their trip differently.
That does not change the fact that on the way to Croatia you will most likely need at least one stop. On average, the journey from Poland to Croatia takes about 12 hours. That is exactly why analysing fuel prices, rest stops and applicable road charges well in advance always helps reduce unnecessary expenses.
It is also worth mentioning that in 2024 many countries introduced 1-day vignettes! This significantly changes the cost-effectiveness of some sections on the Poland-Croatia route.
Legal issues and traffic regulations usually matter less to Polish drivers. And that is a mistake! An unexpected fine in Slovakia can seriously drain your wallet. When choosing a route, make sure to pay attention to safety and weather conditions as well. But that is not all!
Road infrastructure and its condition also have a significant impact on travel comfort, journey time and possible delays. This is especially important for truck and coach drivers, who must take delivery or passenger transport time restrictions into account.
The final route choice should therefore take various factors into consideration so that the journey is not only economical, but also safe and pleasant.
With that in mind, below we present the top 3 routes to Croatia worth considering before setting off:
The fastest route to Croatia | Czechia > Austria > Slovenia
755 km and 9 h

By choosing this route, you will spend most of your time driving on motorways or ring roads around large cities - without wasting too much time in traffic jams. Along the way, you will also enjoy beautiful Alpine views as well as excellent infrastructure (showers, toilets, etc.). All this makes the route to Croatia through Czechia, Austria and Slovenia very comfortable.
The fastest route from Poland to Croatia includes the following sections:
- D1, D35, D46, D52 (Czechia)
- A5, A2, A9 (Austria)

When choosing a route to Croatia, however, take prices (EURO) into account, as well as the fact that Slovenia has some of the most expensive vignettes in Europe. It is therefore worth planning all costs carefully in advance before leaving Poland, taking into account not only meals or drinks, but also road charges.
When heading to Croatia through Czechia, watch out for police patrols! The Czech police like to wait near motorway exits and are happy to issue fines, for example for speeding.

How to get to Croatia by electric car? Vehicle charging stations
For an electric car such as a Tesla, or even hybrids like Hyundai, a trip to Croatia can be quite a challenge. Every EV owner knows that you will not get to Zadar on a single charging session. Most electric cars offer a range of 200 to 300 km. This means that before setting off to Croatia, it is worth dividing the journey into stages and planning at least 2 stops.
With the above in mind, the most sensible route seems to be through the Czech city of Brno, the Slovak capital Bratislava and the Hungarian town of Mosonmagyaróvár. The question is where can you recharge the battery there? Fortunately, there are plenty of options, because Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary have significantly improved the availability of charging stations in recent years, and these are compatible with solutions such as PlugShare and ChargePoint.
Before crossing the Olza border and entering Czechia, you can use the GreenWay charging station located just beyond the junction in Gorzyce on the A1 route. However, if you prefer to recharge abroad, below you will find a list of well-maintained charging points located right by the route on the Brno-Bratislava-Szombathely line:
- ČEZ Charging Station, Ostrava
- Tesla Supercharger, Olomouc
- Pražská energetika Charging Station, Brno
- GreenWay Charging Station, before Bratislava
- Shell Recharge töltőállomás, Mosonmagyaróvár
- Mobiliti EV charging station, Szombathely
Good to know
If you are travelling via Mosonmagyaróvár, make sure to charge the battery before passing Szombathely. The distance to the Croatian-Hungarian border crossing in Letenye is over 100 km, and there are not many charging stations along the way.
