Details about equipment can be found in the article Croatia by car, and information about the toll system in the article road tolls Croatia.

Are roads in Croatia toll roads?

Yes – roads in Croatia are toll roads. The motorway operator is HAC (Hrvatske autoceste), and tolls are collected at toll booths. The amount depends on the season (prices rise by approx. 10% in summer) and the distance travelled.

The most scenic coastline on the Adriatic – crystal-clear water, beautiful islands and historic landmarks. Worth seeing: the sea organ in Zadar, Diocletian's Palace in Split, the Biokovo Mountains near Makarska and the historic walls of Dubrovnik. The roads are narrower than in Istria – worth keeping in mind when planning your motorhome route.

Motorhome through Croatia | Campsites and Accommodation in Croatia

Staying overnight outside designated areas is treated as wild camping and is prohibited. There are several types of places suitable for a motorhome overnight stay:

Camper Park / Stellplatz

Dedicated motorhome zones without full campsite infrastructure. They allow emptying waste water, filling up with water and connecting to electricity, but do not always have showers or a kitchen. Affordable, often located near restaurants, vineyards and private homes.

Camping / Autocamp

Full-scale campsites equipped with extensive facilities – showers, toilets, a kitchen and a laundry. A major advantage is their location – usually close to the sea or other tourist attractions.

Agro-camp or Eco-camp

Agritourism for motorhome travellers – sites in rural areas, on farms, run by local residents. Intimate, cheaper and quieter than regular campsites. A major plus is the opportunity to try local products, olive oil or a wine tasting.

Which campsites are the best in Croatia?

The best and most luxurious campsites in Croatia:

  • Camping Krk Premium Resort – on Krk Island (Kvarner), a 5-star eco-friendly campsite with sea views. Restaurants, pools, wellness area, children's entertainment.
  • Camping Stobreč Split – close to the centre of Split, a peaceful and green site, an excellent base for the city and surrounding islands.
  • Camping Šimuni – on Pag Island, a spacious campsite with a sandy beach and coves. Kayak and SUP board rentals.
  • Kamp Korana – close to the picturesque Plitvice Lakes. High standard, restaurant and comfortable motorhome pitches.
  • Camping Velebit – in the Velebit Mountains, a rustic campsite ideal for hiking. Recommended for those seeking peace and nature.
  • Pet-friendly campsites: Camping Polidor in Bijela Uvala (Istria) with a dedicated dog beach, and Camping Zaton Holiday Resort near Zadar.

How Much Does a Campsite Pitch Cost in Croatia?

Campsites in Croatia are paid. Prices depend on the campsite standard, location, season and number of people. Below are average prices per night for 2 people + motorhome:

Average motorhome accommodation prices in Croatia (2026)
Standard Low season (May, Sep) High season (Jul–Aug)
Small agro-camp €20–35 €35–50
Camper Park / Stellplatz €10–25 €20–35
Beachside campsite (mid-range) €30–50 €50–70
Premium resort €50–80 €80–120+

The price typically consists of: pitch fee (€15–40), per-person charge (€5–15), motorhome fee (€5–10) and tourist tax (€1–2). For example – a pitch at Camping Polidor in August for 2 adults is approx. €53 per night (€50 for a pitch with electricity + €3 tourist tax).

Motorhome through Croatia | Parking and Overnight Stays

Croatia is a very motorhome-friendly country, with over 500 campsites spread along the coast, lakes, mountains and islands. Learn the parking and overnight rules to avoid fines and enjoy your trip without surprises.

Where can you park a motorhome in Croatia?

You can park a motorhome for a short time anywhere that regular car parking is allowed – as long as the motorhome does not look as though it is parked for an overnight stay (no items set out outside and no covered windows).

Parking permitted:

  • in regular car parks (provided there is no ban on vehicles over a certain weight or height),
  • in car parks at tourist attractions, shops, restaurants and petrol stations (subject to parking rules),
  • at odmorište (the equivalent of motorway rest areas) on motorways – suitable for a break, but not for an overnight stay.

Parking not permitted:

  • in places marked with a ban on motorhomes or vehicles exceeding weight/height limits,
  • blocking entrances, fire roads or wild parking in national parks and nature reserves,
  • setting out tables, chairs, an awning or a barbecue – this is treated as camping and an illegal overnight stay, subject to a penalty.

Can you sleep in a motorhome in a car park in Croatia?

Yes, but not always and with certain conditions. At motorway car parks (e.g. Petrol, Tifon, INA) and rest areas you may stay overnight for the purpose of a rest break. Setting up camp and camping is not permitted.

In municipal car parks you may stop if there is no prohibition sign for motorhomes. However, staying overnight in municipal car parks is not recommended – it is often prohibited by local regulations and penalised as "illegal camping".

Can you wild camp in Croatia?

No – wild camping in Croatia is prohibited and can result in a heavy fine. The ban covers:

  • forests and forest roads,
  • coastal areas,
  • national and landscape parks,
  • private land (without the owner's permission),
  • public car parks (especially in towns and by the sea).

Police frequently patrol areas popular with motorhome travellers. Fines are usually €150–400, and in national parks can reach up to €1,000.

Why is wild camping illegal in Croatia?

  • Nature protection – wild camping damages vegetation, litters the area and disturbs wildlife.
  • Fire risk – fires break out frequently in Croatia in summer, particularly in the dry, forested terrain of Dalmatia and Istria. Even a small cigarette end, a barbecue or an incompletely extinguished campfire can cause a tragedy.
  • Safety – tourists camping away from inhabited areas are left without any assistance in the event of theft, vandalism or animal attacks.
  • Supporting local tourism – many Croatians live solely from tourism. Wild camping generates no income or taxes, which is detrimental to the whole country.

Is Croatia safe for motorhome travellers?

Yes, Croatia is considered one of the safest tourist destinations in Europe. The crime rate is low, and thefts or assaults are very rare. In the evenings you can walk freely around the towns and along the seafront.

Croatia is a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area, which guarantees compliance with European safety standards. The police and health services have a good reputation and are widely available. The Adriatic is considered one of the cleanest seas in Europe.

What should you watch out for in Croatia?

In Croatia you need to watch out for high temperatures – a hat, sunscreen and drinking plenty of water will be essential. When swimming in the sea you may encounter sea urchins and sharp rocks, especially on pebble beaches – water shoes will be handy. Occasionally, in crowded places, petty theft occurs – do not leave valuables in plain sight.
