The moment a British, Irish or English-speaking driver starts travelling across mainland Europe, the road charge landscape can change quickly. What can you buy on Autopay?
English-speaking drivers heading across Europe will find products for the most important countries on a typical Continental route:
Austria
The Austrian motorway vignette, known as the Autobahnvignette, is required on all motorways and expressways. On Autopay it is available as a 1-day or 10-day digital vignette. It is essential for ski trips to the Alps, drives to Vienna or Salzburg, and many routes into Central Europe.
Switzerland
The Swiss motorway vignette is an annual flat-rate pass valid for all Swiss motorways. It is required from the moment you join the motorway at the border, whether you are heading into the Alps or crossing Switzerland on the way to Italy.
Czechia
Czechia uses a fully digital vignette registered to your number plate – no sticker required. It is available as a 1-day, 10-day, 30-day or annual pass.
Hungary
The Hungarian e-vignette, also known as matrica, covers all motorways. It is available with validity periods from 1 day to 1 year and is essential for drivers heading to Budapest or continuing south.
Slovakia
Slovakia requires a digital vignette for motorway and expressway travel. It is available as a 1-day, 10-day, 30-day or annual pass.
Slovenia
A vignette is required on Slovenian motorways. It is available as a 7-day, 1-month or 1-year vignette, plus a 6-month vignette for motorcycles, and is especially important for routes towards Croatia via Ljubljana.
Croatia
Croatia is replacing its motorway toll booths with an electronic free-flow system, with full switchover planned by 1 March 2027. With an Autopay toll box, tolls on HAC motorways are charged automatically and you drive through the ENC lanes without stopping (the Istrian motorways are not covered). Croatia remains one of the most popular summer destinations for drivers heading to the Adriatic coast.

Toll devices and transponders
In countries that charge tolls at toll gates – Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Croatia – a toll box, also known as an OBU, lets you drive through without stopping, with tolls charged automatically. Autopay offers toll boxes for all five countries. Please note: a toll box does not replace a vignette – in vignette countries such as Czechia, Slovakia or Hungary, you still need one.
How does it work?
Ordering through Autopay takes just a few minutes. Here’s how the process works from start to finish:
1. Choose your product
Select the country or countries you are travelling through, choose the right vignette duration for your trip and add it to your order. You can combine multiple countries in a single purchase.
2. Enter your vehicle details
Provide your vehicle registration number and, where required, the country of registration. Digital vignettes are linked directly to your number plate – no sticker to attach, nothing to print and no risk of losing a receipt.
3. Pay securely online
Complete your purchase using your preferred payment method. You’ll receive confirmation by email immediately after payment.
4. Hit the road
Digital vignettes are activated on the date you select. There is nothing to print or display – your registration plate is recognised automatically at toll points and control cameras.
Good to know
You choose the start date of your vignette when you order. We recommend buying before you leave rather than at the border – it is faster, easier and means one less thing to worry about on the road.
