Road tolls in Spain without stopping at the gates
Spain has no vignettes. Most of its motorways are free, and you pay mainly on sections marked “AP” as well as on a few “R” roads and in tunnels, at toll gates and for the distance you drive. With the Autopay toll box you use the VIA-T lane, the barrier lifts by itself and all your trips are settled together.
- Also works in France, Italy and Portugal
- One invoice a month
In the configurator you choose the variant and enter your vehicle details.
What do you pay for?
For driving on toll motorways (autopistas, marked AP), a few R roads around Madrid and some tunnels. Motorways and expressways marked “A” are free.
Which vehicles?
Cars, motorcycles and campervans up to 3 m high and 3.5 t actual weight.
What is not covered?
Individual sections without VIA-T lanes, where you pay by card or in cash, and the low-emission zones (ZBE) in cities, which are a separate system.
How do you pay?
All trips go on one invoice at the end of the month and the amount is collected automatically.
At the toll gate
Which lane to choose
Signs above the road mark the lanes ahead of every toll plaza. The right lane depends on how you pay.
Blue sign with a white letter “T”
VIA-T / Telepeaje
The lane for on-board units. You drive through without stopping, slowing down to about 30 km/h.
Card symbol (Tarjetas)
Payment card
You insert the ticket into the machine and pay by Visa, Mastercard or American Express. Queues build up here in high season.
Green arrow or “Manual”
Cash
A booth staffed by a cashier. Usually the slowest lane.
Closed and open system
On most toll motorways you take a ticket at the entrance and pay at the exit. The amount depends on the distance driven, the vehicle class and, on some routes, the time of day. Some sections charge a fixed toll at the gate, without a ticket. With a toll box everything happens automatically in both cases.

Before you go
Good to know about Spain
-
AP or A? Autopistas (AP) may be tolled, and before the toll plaza you see the word “Peaje”. Autovías (A) are free and often run parallel to the toll motorways. In many places you can choose between a faster toll route and a cheaper free one.
- Campervans and trailers Axles and twin wheels decide. A campervan or trailer with twin wheels on an axle falls into the higher Pesados 1 class. The toll box covers vehicles up to 3 m high and 3.5 t.
- VIA-T lane without a toll box If you drive into a VIA-T lane by mistake without a toll box, the barrier will not lift. Use the intercom at the gate and pay on the spot. Do not reverse.
- Low-emission zones (ZBE) Madrid, Barcelona and other large cities have restricted traffic zones. The rules for cars with foreign number plates differ from city to city. In Barcelona, for example, you have to register in advance, so check the local rules before driving into a city centre.
- Mandatory equipment A warning triangle and a hi-vis vest. The Spanish V-16 beacon is mandatory for cars registered in Spain, while cars registered abroad may still use the warning triangle.
-
Motorcycle Carry the toll box in a tank bag, facing forward and protected from rain.
The Spanish toll motorway network is run by several operators, and VIA-T is the common system for all of them. Slow down in the lane marked “T” and the barrier lifts once the toll box is read. As a rough guide, a toll motorway costs about €10–20 per 100 km by car.

On the way
On the way to Spain: vignettes for your route
Germany is toll-free for cars, and the same toll box pays the French and Spanish toll gates. Whether you need vignettes depends on where you start: Czechia and Switzerland require one, and starting in Austria you also need the Austrian vignette for the motorways at home.
