Romania makes vignette prices depend on the vehicle's emission standard

From 1 October 2026 Romania applies new rules to buying the rovinieta. Drivers must also state the emission standard of their vehicle, and the price of the vignette depends on it.

What changes when buying a vignette for Romania?

According to the announcement by CNAIR, the Romanian national road administration, from 1 October 2026, 00:00, the rovinieta is bought with the vehicle's emission standard taken into account. These are the options to choose from:

  • Euro 0
  • Euro 1
  • Euro 2
  • Euro 3
  • Euro 4
  • Euro 5
  • Euro 6
  • electric vehicle

For drivers of passenger cars and goods vehicles with a maximum permissible weight of up to 3.5 tonnes, three things matter most:

  • vignettes bought before 1 October 2026 remain valid until the end of their period,
  • the existing split into categories (passenger cars / goods vehicles) does not change,
  • when buying a vignette, the vehicle's emission standard has to be stated as well.

Where to find the vehicle's emission standard?

The Euro standard is in the vehicle's registration certificate, usually in field V.9. If the registration certificate does not state an emission standard, CNAIR assigns the vehicle to Euro 0, the most expensive tariff. Electric cars have a separate rate, the cheapest of all.

Have vignette prices in Romania changed?

Yes – the emission standard affects the final price of the vignette. The new tariff of the Romanian Ministry of Transport introduces four price groups: electric vehicles, Euro 6, Euro 4 and 5, and Euro 3 and older. Drivers of cars with the oldest emission standards pay the most, owners of electric vehicles the least. You can check the current prices of Romanian vignettes for your vehicle in the Autopay configurator, where you select the emission standard during the purchase.
