When is Austria phasing out sticker vignettes?
Sticker vignettes have accompanied drivers in Austria since 1997. They are affixed to the car's windscreen as proof that the toll for using the motorways and expressways subject to the vignette requirement has been paid. Since 2017 drivers have also been able to use digital vignettes. Both options have run in parallel, letting drivers choose between a sticker and a vignette assigned electronically to their registration number.
From 2027 only digital vignettes will be available. Removing stickers from sale does not, however, mean that every vignette bought earlier loses its validity at the end of December 2026.
Is an annual 2026 sticker vignette still valid in 2027?
Yes – the annual 2026 sticker vignette is valid up to and including 31 January 2027. Drivers who have it correctly affixed to the windscreen can use it until the end of that period. They do not have to buy a digital vignette just because a new year has begun.
What changes for drivers?
A digital vignette does not have to be stuck to the windscreen or removed once it expires. It is linked to the vehicle's registration number, which is used to check whether a valid vignette has been bought for the car. When buying, pay particular attention to:
- Registration number and country of registration – the details must match the vehicle you will travel in.
- Vehicle category – the right product has to be chosen.
- Start and period of validity – the vignette should cover the whole planned journey on toll roads.
Before entering a toll road, check your purchase confirmation and the date the vignette's validity starts. Making the payment alone does not mean the chosen product is already valid at the moment of purchase.
Where to buy a digital vignette for Austria?
Austrian electronic vignettes are organised and issued by ASFINAG, the company that operates Austria's road network. Vignettes can be bought online directly on its website or through official resellers. In Europe only 3 companies hold the status of official reseller of ASFINAG digital vignettes: Autopay, ADAC and Tolltickets. Autopay is the only company that has an official partnership with ASFINAG and also sells vignettes for the other countries, such as the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria. This means that at Autopay all vignettes can be bought conveniently in one place.
