About electronic vignettes

Where are e-vignettes valid?

E-vignettes are valid in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Austria, Romania, Bulgaria, Switzerland and Hungary. These countries use an electronic toll system, which means vignettes are no longer sold as windshield stickers. Road charges are paid through each country's electronic system. The vignette is linked to your vehicle registration plate, and roadside cameras check whether your vehicle is allowed to use the route. If the system detects that the vehicle has no valid vignette, a fine is issued and sent to the registered owner.

How do I choose the right vignette for my vehicle?

Because road rules vary between countries, it's important to make sure the vignette matches your vehicle. Before purchasing a vignette, we recommend carefully reading the information shown during checkout—especially the vehicle category. Issues with incorrect charges can happen because in some countries the up-to-3.5-tonne class is further split into sub-categories. This applies to three countries: Hungary, Slovenia and Romania.

How do I place an order?

To order a vignette for toll roads correctly, choose the country you're travelling to or passing through and follow the steps shown during checkout. Make sure you select the correct vehicle category—your vehicle registration document can help.

Frequently Asked Questions | FAQ

What is an e-vignette?

An e-vignette is a toll fee for using paid roads (motorways / expressways) in selected countries, collected via an electronic toll system. When purchasing an e-vignette, you must provide your vehicle details and the type of vignette required. Once the transaction is complete, the fee is assigned to the vehicle and a confirmation, usually in PDF format, is sent to you.

In which countries are vignettes required?

Vignettes are required in Austria, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Switzerland and Romania.

Where can I buy vignettes?

You can purchase vignettes online through the Autopay service. The official purchase confirmation (PDF) will be sent to your e-mail address, usually within 15 minutes of placing the order.

Which vehicles require a vignette?

Vignettes are primarily intended for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, such as motorcycles, cars and trailers (with the exception of Romania, which also uses the vignette system for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes). Each country has its own regulations and exemptions, so please check the country descriptions on the Autopay website to determine whether your vehicle requires a vignette.

Can I drive on a toll road after receiving the purchase confirmation?

Yes. After receiving the purchase confirmation, you may use the toll roads in accordance with the details stated on the vignette. There is no need to stop anywhere, register additionally, or stick anything on the windscreen.

When is the best time to buy a vignette?

It is best to buy vignettes online – one or two days before your trip. This way you can be fairly confident the trip will go ahead, the vehicle will be ready, and the route will not change. It also gives you time to read the information, choose the correct vignette category for your vehicle, and enter the vehicle details carefully.

What is the difference between a sticker vignette and an e-vignette?

The windscreen sticker vignette was used in the past as a form of road toll. It has since been replaced by electronic fees – e-vignettes – which require no sticker. The fee is linked to the vehicle's registration number.

Can vignettes be returned or edited?

Each country has its own regulations regarding the possibility of editing or returning vignettes. Some countries do not allow returns or changes (e.g. Hungary). For more information, please refer to our information on vignette returns and edits.

How are vignettes checked?

The vignette is linked to the vehicle's registration number. Checks are carried out by motorway authorities, the police and a camera system installed along toll roads, which scans licence plates to verify vignette validity.
